The end of a long but enjoyable season as your Captain comes to an end and I must say that, in the main, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and proud to be the captain of a great Club. Any Club is about the members, and I count myself extremely lucky to have so many loyal members to call upon week after week. As a relatively small club I believe we have performed well and although winning only 13 of our 31 fixtures several were lost by only a few shots. Arguably more importantly have been the compliments and comments made to me by opposing Captains and Presidents which has put your club in the highest of esteem so well done to all of you for promoting our club so well.
As well as friendly matches we have hosted County competitions and hosted the County Team against the VPs when we supplied a winning rink to the County. Throughout the season most members have taken part in the excellent competitions run by Melvyn Johnson culminating in 2 very exciting and professional finals days. Then there was the very successful Gala Day which raised a lot of money for the club.
All in all, it been a great season and I hope that whoever you vote in as Captain next year will enjoy the tremendous support from you all. The Club is in a very good place – let’s keep it that way.
Now to the members who deserve praise and thanks:
THE GREENKEEPER: Phil has done a tremendous job once again and as I write he is on the green with volunteer members putting the green to bed. In previous years the Club has spent up to £5000 for this necessary task. Thanks to Phil’s research and “on the job” learning this annual task costs a lot less and, in my opinion, a better result. As we have all experienced some horrific playing surfaces we can count ourselves lucky that we have a dedicated greenkeeper in PJ Wright – thank you Phil.
THE BAR. According to some the bar being open is more important than the playing surface (only joking!) We have Ian Butcher to thank for managing the bar so well, ensuring that whenever possible the bar has been open to members and guests to enjoy the wonderful views (Ian looks after the hedges as well!)
THE HELPERS. So many people have helped in putting tables out, getting the rinks ready and after the matches putting equipment and tables away but special thanks go to David Poulson and Peta Ingram (especially for the rolls!), Elaine and Kevin Hawgood, Keri and Phil Gibson, Alby Bond and Malc Sanders.
THE MANGEMENT COMMITTEE. Fortunately many members will not have witnessed the lack of support from previous Management Committee members in promoting the Bowls Section of the Club. We are very grateful to Kevin Hawgood, the Chair on the Bowls and Tennis Management Committee for the support they have given the Bowls section ensuring that we have the facilities and equipment to play our beloved sport.
